The founding TAC Program is a 36 week court mandated itervention program in Linn Country, Oregon. It is designed for abusive men; although there are some men who come into the program from other sources such as the Department of Human Services, lawyers, or self-referrals. The TAC program is technically what the law calls a "batterer intervention program". It is not an anger management program. What is addressed in the curriculum is much more than anger and how to control it.
Founding Philosophy
- True change is only possible within a cooperative alliance between participants and facilitators. This means the facilitators will respect, but not collude with, each and every participant as a person. At no time will the participant be labeled, demeaned, or patronized.
- When abusers engage in violent acts, they are making a choice to be aggressive.
- The roots of domestic abuse are to be found in an individual's need for power and control.
- People who engage in abusive behaviors are capable of positive change if they choose to do so.
- Abusers must be held accountable for their actions and take responsibility for hurting everyone involved in the abuse.
- Society helps to foster an environment condusive to heirarchy, power, control, and objectification, which all lead to abuse if left unchecked.
Founding Goals
- To help stop and prevent all forms of domestic abuse from occurring so that all victims, namely women and children, can feel safe in their homes and their communities.
- To provide challenging curriculum so that a deeper level of change may occur.
- To provide a safe environment in which participants feel they can share their experiences throughout their change process.
- Facilitators are willing to talk about problems and encourage compromise.
- All participants who choose to fully engage in the program and integrate the information learned will be able to:
- Hold self accountable for all abusive behaviors engaged in.
- Will be self-responsible for all abusive behaviors.
- Understand how our culture influences abusive behaviors.
- Identify and stop all abusive behaviors engaged in.
- Identify escalation cues and act accordingly, which would include using de-escaltion skills, and appropriate Time Outs strategies.
- Identify and disprove Thinking Errors engaged in.
- Use appropriate communication skills to express difficult thoughts and feelings.
- Use effective problem solving skills
- Have a better understanding of who they are as people
