Making TAC Work for You
Our founding program based out of Corvallis, OR puts into action all of the things you have read about on this site. Odds are you aren't anywhere near us and taking advantage of the program we run is an impossibility. You can, however, take advantage of our success and all of our tools to create a TAC group of your own. We wanted to share the success that we have seen in our own DAIP program with anyone else who wants to make a difference in combating abuse.
We have put together everything you need right here to launch and effectively run your own TAC based intervention program. You can teach the same curriculum that we use in class, keep track of participants on the same software, use the same reports and have access to the training materials that we use to train our own facilitators. We can all work together to better our communities and reduce domestic abuse everywhere.
Curriculum
The material that we teach in group is made up of 9 units. These units are the backbone of our message, what we are trying to have our participants absorb and integrate into their lives. It also includes in-group activities and reference material for recurring concepts. The 9 units of TAC are:
- Becoming Accountable
- Male Priviledge
- Emotional, Psychological, Verbal Abuses and Isolation
- Physical Abuse & Intimidation
- Sexual Abuse and Relationship Jealousy
- Other Forms of Abuse (Property Abuse, Financial Abuse, Abusive Use of Religion, Stalking)
- Casualties of Abuse
- Relationships
- Communication
In addition to these units, we also have a few recurring lessons/themes that are reinforced and talked about throughout the other units. A participant is introduced to these at orientation. You can check out our orientation packet yourself to get an idea about the kinds of things we teach and the reference material we provide for use throughout the change process.
Software
All TAC groups (including the ones we run for our founding program) are managed on the TAC software right here at www.tacprogram.com. A participant's entire file can be kept online right here, and accessible 24 hours a day on any machine with an internet connection. Far more secure than a filing cabinet, and built just for TAC groups. It will keep you up to date on exactly how much a participant owes in fees, who is behind in attendence and even run reports.
Resources and other TAC related materials are also accessible through your login to the site. The full curriculum, training materials, certificates of completion and other supplemental documents are all accessible online. When we add new material, update the curriculum or make a cool new addition to the tracking software you get all of this automatically.
Training
How you teach is just as important as what you teach. We provide guides and material not only for the participants, but also for the facilitators running the groups. What to expect in group, how to best teach certain material and how to keep a session from being derailed are all examples of the kinds of skills necessary to be a great TAC facilitator. Running these kinds of groups can be daunting but don't worry, we are right behind you every step of the way.
Interested in TAC, but still need some more information? Perhaps you would like more details about what exactly we are teaching in unit eight or what kinds of reports are available to be run from the software. We offer Software Demos and Curriculum Reviews for the investigative types to learn even more about the inner working of TAC before deciding to buy into it.
Software Demo
A few screenshots doesn't really give you a feel for what is available in the software. If you want to see how participants are tracked, classes are entered and reports are run, we can do a demo of the software for you and show you all the important features. A software demo usually only takes about 30 minutes and can be done over the phone while using a desktop sharing application so that you can watch along. All you need is an internet connection.
Curriculum Review
If you are interested in some more detail about exactly what we are teaching, we can send you a full copy of any unit for review purposes.
Plans
We have a lot more great ideas to put towards TAC and make a great program even better. Here is a list of enhancements that we are working on adding to TAC to give you a glimpse of where we are going.
- Accountability Partners - Direct access to a limited set of information for case workers, judges, DAs or other community members into a participant's records.
- Unit by Unit Training Guides - More information for facilitators about how to run each unit. A facilitator's cheat sheet and guide to the specific material.
- Billing to a Third Party - Some participants do not pay directly, but their fees are billed to a third party.
- Recorded Software Demos and Presentations - Our course overview and walkthrough of our software on demand right from www.tacprogram.com.
- Facilitator Community - Interact with other TAC facilitators online through forums. Post questions or share insights about running intervention programs.
Implementation Plan
If you are ready to get moving and want to start up your own TAC group, there are a few things you will have to do first. While we provide the blueprints and building materials for a successful abuse intervention program, you need the people and mortar to make it happen. The first and most important thing you will need to run a TAC group are a few passionate people. At least one person must be a master's level therapist or counselor at a minimum to act as the program's director. The director oversees the program and is responsible for the day to day operations, including the contact point for the program. Every TAC group should be co-facilitated with one male and one female facilitator. The director can also be a facilitator, but this means you will need 2 people at a minimum to get the ball rolling.
You will also need a space to run groups in. Most communities have space that can be used for free when doing this type of work. You will need approximately 400 square feet of space with some tables and chairs to seat 12 people. Lastly, you will need an internet connection for access to the software/curriculum and some participants. If you have about 5 participants, you can start up a group!
